Why people convert IGES to 3MF
Printing something that arrived as an old surface model, usually from a supplier whose toolchain has not moved since the 1990s.
IGES declares its unit in the Global section, and 3MF records a unit in the file, so this is one of the few routes where the physical size is carried end to end and never assumed. That is worth having when the part is going on a build plate.
The thing that will bite you is watertightness. IGES surfaces are frequently unstitched, and a slicer cannot decide what is inside a shape with gaps in it. This conversion reports whether the result came out closed and how many open edges it has. If it is open, heal the surfaces in CAD first, or repair the mesh in your slicer, before committing to a long print.

You get a binary 3MF file containing triangles. The reader tessellates supported surfaces or uses saved render meshes where required by the source format. Inspect curved faces at the intended output size. The triangle count depends on the model and the reader's meshing settings.

What to check afterwards
- IGES declares its unit in the file. Check the output dimensions in the receiving application, especially when its import settings can override the unit.
- Curves become facets. IGES stores exact surfaces, so a hole is a cylinder with a radius. 3MF stores triangles, so that cylinder becomes a many-sided prism. Look at curved faces in the result at the size you intend to make the part.
If you need something this conversion cannot give you
If you need editable CAD geometry, don't convert at all. Open the IGES file directly in FreeCAD, Fusion, Onshape or SolidWorks. Every mesh format destroys the exact surfaces, and no later conversion brings them back.
