Why people convert COLLADA to GLB
COLLADA and glTF are both Khronos formats and this conversion is essentially the succession. glTF exists because Khronos concluded that COLLADA was too verbose and too permissive for runtime delivery, so moving a scene from one to the other is the upgrade the standards body itself recommends.
Almost everything transfers. The node hierarchy with its transforms, materials and colours, and object names all survive, because glTF has a direct equivalent for each.
The unit scale factor COLLADA declares is converted into glTF's metres, and the up-axis declaration is honoured on import so the model is not lying on its side. For SketchUp exports in particular, that second step is what makes this work at all.

You get a binary GLB file containing the same triangles the COLLADA file described. No geometry is added, removed or approximated: mesh-to-mesh conversion is a change of container, and this site's tests check that the triangle count comes out identical.
The output uses metres, as required by the glTF specification.

What to check afterwards
- COLLADA declares its unit in the file. Check the output dimensions in the receiving application, especially when its import settings can override the unit.
- Coordinates are stored as 32-bit floats. For a part measured in millimetres that's far finer than any machine tolerance. For a model spanning hundreds of thousands of units it isn't.
If you need something this conversion cannot give you
This pair loses very little. GLB carries what COLLADA carries, so the main reason to choose a different target is what the receiving software accepts.
