Why people convert AMF to GLB

Getting an additive manufacturing file onto the web, where AMF has no support whatsoever and GLB is the standard.

This target keeps more of the source than any other mesh format here. AMF's colour survives as a glTF base colour, and where the file holds several named objects they arrive as separate nodes rather than one merged body.

The numbers all change. AMF declares its unit and glTF is metres by specification, so an AMF in millimetres has every coordinate divided by 1000. The model is the same physical size and none of the values in the file are the ones you started with, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a dimension in the JSON.

You get a binary GLB file containing the same triangles the AMF file described. No geometry is added, removed or approximated: mesh-to-mesh conversion is a change of container, and this site's tests check that the triangle count comes out identical.

The output uses metres, as required by the glTF specification.

What to check afterwards

  • AMF declares its unit in the file. Check the output dimensions in the receiving application, especially when its import settings can override the unit.
  • Coordinates are stored as 32-bit floats. For a part measured in millimetres that's far finer than any machine tolerance. For a model spanning hundreds of thousands of units it isn't.

If you need something this conversion cannot give you

This pair loses very little. GLB carries what AMF carries, so the main reason to choose a different target is what the receiving software accepts.
