At this needs roughly here. Whether it fits depends on the geometry, not the size: a large CAD assembly can open, while a much smaller STEP exported from a mesh can run out of memory. If it does, this page says so, and the file never leaves your computer either way.

Why repeated AMF parts appear only once
AMF places repeated instances using a constellation, which says "put this object here, here and here" without copying the geometry. This reader loads the source geometry and does not apply that placement, so a file describing twenty arranged copies shows one. The warning tells you when a constellation was present.
AMF files are also usually compressed. A file that will not open in other software is often a zipped AMF that the other tool did not unpack.
The format declares its unit, which puts it ahead of STL, but almost nothing outside a few slicers reads it. If you are choosing a print format today, 3MF is the one with support behind it. The AMF guide covers the comparison.
