What a 3DM file is

.3dm is the file format of Rhinoceros 3D, from Robert McNeel & Associates. Unlike most vendor formats, its reader and writer are published as the openNURBS toolkit under a permissive licence, which is why Rhino files open in far more places than, say, SolidWorks files do.

Rhino is a surface and NURBS modeller by nature, and 3DM reflects that. A 3DM file usually contains a mixture of:

  • NURBS surfaces and polysurfaces
  • Closed polysurfaces, which Rhino calls solids
  • Curves, points and point clouds
  • Meshes, either modelled directly or cached for display
  • Layers, object names, colours and materials
  • Annotations and dimensions

Units, layers and the things that survive

3DM stores its unit system in the file (millimetres, inches, feet, microns and more), so a Rhino file opens at the right physical size. It also stores a model tolerance, which matters more than people expect: Rhino's booleans and joins work to that tolerance, and a file modelled at 0.01 mm tolerance behaves differently from one at 0.001 mm.

Layers survive, and so do object names and display colours. For an architectural or jewellery model, that structure is often as valuable as the geometry.

Reading a 3DM file outside Rhino

Every 3DM file saved with render meshes contains, alongside the exact NURBS data, a triangulated version for display. That is what this site's viewer shows, and it is the same geometry Rhino puts on screen.

Objects with no surface (curves, points, text and annotations) have no render mesh and cannot be shown or converted. The viewer here reports how many objects were skipped for that reason, so you know when the model on screen is partial.

Where 3DM is strong

  • Complex freeform surfaces. Rhino's NURBS modelling is its reason to

exist, and 3DM carries it losslessly.

  • Jewellery, marine, footwear and architecture, where Rhino has deep

adoption.

  • Interoperability for a vendor format, thanks to openNURBS.

Where it is not

  • It is not a neutral standard. A machine shop may or may not have Rhino.
  • It carries no parametric history, in the sense a Fusion or SolidWorks user

means. Rhino's Grasshopper definitions live outside the 3DM file.

  • Support outside Rhino, while unusually good for a vendor format, is still

patchy for the more exotic object types.

Sending a Rhino model elsewhere

For manufacturing, export STEP from Rhino rather than sending 3DM. For 3D printing, export STL or 3MF, and set the mesh settings deliberately, because Rhino's default meshing is tuned for display and a printed part usually wants finer.

For rendering and web use, glTF or GLB.
